STEPHANIE WOOD: MAGIC GARDENS AND COLOURFUL ETHNIC PAINTINGS
9 - 16 MAY AT FORZA 9 GALLERY, POLIS CHRYSOCHOUS

Stephanie Wood’s magic gardens revel in a natural world imbued with the spirit of the Creator. Tiny sailboats nestle in patches of vibrant foliage. Miniature Greek churches glow on flat edged leaves.

Her colourful ethnic paintings utilize the bold embroidered bags and hangings of the Central Asian migratory tribes; a celebration of man’s deep heart and nomadic longing.

On these canvases a thicket of trees may grow out of a gaudy camel trapping, a golden gate top a highly decorated food storage bag. A miniature world may settle on a densely patterned woollen glove.

Stephanie grew up in the dark and muted greens of British Columbia, Canada. Her vibrant Mediterranean canvases surprised even herself. She was once asked by her painting professor, at the University of Virginia, B.C., where she received her B.F.A., to please turn her painting to the wall when not working on it, as the brightness of its colours hurt his eyes.

Stephanie moved to Cyprus 20 years ago and her colours were instantly at home. Daily life in Droushia Village, Paphos involves light-filled visual journeys to delight the eye. Rolling fields of grapevines shimmer under high skies of intense blue. Puffy white clouds nestle against the graphic edges of the high hills.
And the turquoise opaqueness of the Mediterranean waits below.

A selection of Stephanie’s work will be exhibited at the Forza 9 Gallery in Polis from 9 - 16 May.
The opening of the exhibition was Friday, 9th of May at 7PM.
